GFP Melanoid axolotls have dark, velvety skin due to the absence of iridophores which are cells that produce the shiny, iridescent pigment in wild and some other types. These animals contain Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), a protein isolated from jellyfish and genetically passed down through breeding that makes them glow green for their entire life under blue led lighting. GFP axolotls are all easily identified by their bright green pupils.
Notice:
Due to unique genetic variations across the species, your axolotl may not look identical to the axolotls on our website.

After doing weeks of research, tank cycling I committed to buying an axolotl pair for a 60 gallon breeder for a family Christmas gift, unfortunately I chose a different breeder initially and the axolotl arrived smaller than described and for nearly double as AxolotlsNYC, after losing a battle to possibly bacteria or fungus in an exactly 3″ axolotl baby that never got a chance out of the tub I gave it one more shot and found axolotlsNYC and cannot be happier, the axolotl arrived exactly as described size wise, was cheaper, and arrived hungry and happy to explore. I’ve read a lot about slow acclimation but whatever these babies are given for enrichment they show up ready to nom, explore and derp. Loved the experience so much I committed to a second one 2 weeks later a pink Albino that showed up in just as good of shape. I couldn’t be happier and more relieved that the experience was salvaged despite the unfortunate setback with another online breeder!
