Melanoid axolotls are a morph characterized by their darker colors, which is caused by a recessive mutation known as melanism. Much like how albinism affects an axolotl’s ability to produce darker pigments (melanophores), melanism affects the axolotl’s ability to produce light reflecting pigments (iridophores). As such, they can range from a dark grayish to a completely black body color, with dark spots and black or dark purple gills. Most melanoids also have a paler gray belly. Some melanoid axolotls looks similar to a dark wild type, but will lack the shiny golden eye ring seen in wild axolotls. As they age, they will change to an all black color.
